I feared that writing a second Elena book would mean locking myself
into an Elena series. It wouldn't take long before I'd start losing steam,
getting anxious
to try something else. Let’s face it, there are only so many ‘sex in the
woods’ scenes one person can write. If I did manage to sell a few more werewolf
books, by that time my publishers might be reluctant to let me try something else.
I decided that the best solution lay somewhere in the middle. I’d
write a sequel that I hoped could indeed launch a series, but not a
series strictly about werewolves. I’d already created a world with
werewolves. Why not write a book where Elena learns that werewolves
aren’t the only supernatural beings around? That way, I could introduce
another woman, of another supernatural ‘race’, who could take over
narration of the third novel. Women of the Otherworld. That would be my
series.
After that second novel,
Stolen, I foisted
narration duties on a witch for two books (
Dime
Store Magic &
Industrial Magic), and a
ghost for one (
Haunted). I've even
found a way around the "
Women of the Otherworld" title by writing
online novellas from a male point of view (
Savage,
Ascension &
Beginnings) Now, with the sixth book, I'm returning to where I
started, with another Elena novel,
Broken.
After that, expect to see more of the same—new narrators taking a turn,
and old ones returning for another go.
