Is It Over?

SPOILERS AHEAD. I’ve hidden this page–and even given it a vague title–to keep those who haven’t read “The Deepest of Secrets” from stumbling over it. If you somehow have, please turn back now 🙂

If you know someone who also wants these answers, feel free to pass them the link. Please do not post any of these details online. There will be a more formal announcement of the new series this spring. For now, shhh… People are still reading 😉

Still here? Then you’ve read “The Deepest of Secrets” and know that Rockton is no more. Literally no more, having been not only closed down but physically dismantled.

I have always said that I won’t continue a series past the point where my narrator has accomplished the primary goal, and for Rockton, that was solving the mystery of the hostiles and breaking free from the council’s control.

As readers could see the series winding down, they made it clear they weren’t done with these characters. My publisher also wasn’t done with the series and asked me to consider a spin-off. I happily pitched them a concept. I had the trifecta I needed to continue: readers wanted more, the publisher wanted more, and I was happy to write more.

As a reader, you may be saying you’re done, thanks. And that’s okay! I know that some readers feel an obligation to continue reading a series even after they’ve tired of it, and that’s where Deepest really can mark the end point. Rockton is now a complete series, and those readers can set it aside and move on.

For those who want to return, I’m sure you know what my “spin-off” will be. In Deepest, Casey and Eric committed to the huge step of creating their own Rockton, where they can feel they are fulfilling the promise they make to residents–that they have come to a place of sanctuary. Their new town name reflects that: Haven’s Rock (for sanctuary and a shout-out to its origins)

How well does this plan go? Well, the first book will be called “Murder at Haven’s Rock” LOL Don’t blame Casey and Eric too quickly–they’re still living down south when they’re called in to investigate the disappearance of two construction crew members. But this is a mystery series, and Casey and Eric are going to discover that being in charge doesn’t mean being in control. It just means that when things go wrong, you don’t have anyone else to blame. There will be a learning curve as they deal with their new environment, new neighbors and new procedures for vetting residents.

I’m also planning a novella to bridge the two series (taking place between the two.) There will be a mystery. It might not be murder (they really do need a break.) I haven’t decided whether it will be from Casey’s POV or another character’s (Eric? April? Isabel?) If you have a preference–Casey’s POV or another specific characters, please comment below.

I will continue to read about these characters for as long as you’re willing to write about them!! I would personally love for the spin-off to continue being narrated through Casey’s POV, but for the bridge it could be interesting to see it through Dalton’s perspective. Regardless, I will be reading them alll!!! Hands down my favorite series. Thank you for creating this place and these characters.

  2. Just finished Deepest and SO happy to hear that it’s not the end of Casey, Eric, and the others!! Can’t wait for the Haven’s Rock spin-off!
For the novella, I’d love it to be Eric’s POV. And a non-murder mystery would be a lot of fun (and give him and Casey a much needed break lol).
Thank you sooooo much for continuing with these characters!!

  3. I just finished The Deepest of Secrets and am THRILLED that Casey and Dalton etc will continue in the new series. I can’t wait !!!!!

  4. Woohoo! The Rockton gang feels like family by now, so I’m so excited to get them back for new adventures! Looking forward to seeing some more crazy animal stunts from Casey, haha! I’m so, so happy with the core group you’ve made for Haven’s Rock! All my favourite characters live on! It would be interesting to see a POV or know more about Jen! I love her character growth so far, she’s such a funny nemesis for Casey. I hope that you can get Therese Plummer back as narrator as well! She really brings the group to life in the audiobooks 🙂

  5. Loved, loved, loved this series. And I’m very happy you will be continuing to write about Casey & Dalton. I would like the series to continue to be told from Casey’s POV, but hearing from the others would be nice as well.

I’d be happy to learn more about Jacob or Cypher.
Possibly a couples novella with Jacob and Nicole and/or Cypher and Jen?

  7. Loved this series and I am along for the ride for the spin-off! I’d like to see the novella from April’s perspective. I really liked her and I want to get to know her better, especially with her being on the autism spectrum.

Can’t wait to visit these characters again!

This has been one of my favorite series and am happy to know that that Casey, Eric and crew will be with us. It will be a new adventure for them as well as us. Thanks so much for the books – looking forward to the new ones.

  9. Woohoo I can’t wait! Please try to get Therese Plummer back as narrator.

    1. Yay! I’m so glad you’re continuing with these characters. I would love at least sooner of Eric’s POV in the new one. Of course, I would like to see inside April and Isabelle’s head as well…so I’m no help 🙂
I can’t wait to see how Eric adjusts, he has such a strong curiosity, I can only imagine what all he would want to see now that there’s a little time

  10. Absolutely continue the story!!!

  11. P J Parasink says:

I really like this series, so happy that it will continue, I think that Casey and Eric and the characters of Rockton still have a long way to go. Thanks Kelly!

  12. So happy to hear I can read more about Casey and Eric. As for the spinoff , I’d love to read it from Eric’s POV, cuss words included. Lol.

  13. Karen Everett says:

Excited. As I love the unusual mysteries you write. Glad we aren’t leaving the north, as I still miss Cainsville. LOL

  14. This is great news. I think a bridge from April’s point of view would be very good. She sees things so differently. I’d be happy with any of them. Best Wishes!

  15. Very excited to hear that the series is continuing! This has been my favourite of all your world’s so far! A novella from Eric’s perspective would be fantastic especially since his entire identity (sheriff of Rockton) and way of being have ceased to exist. It would be interesting to see what he makes of really living in the outside world.

  16. Mathias Mathias Mathias.

Yippee! I am so thrilled to have more of these interesting and (sometimes quirky)characters. It’s been a great concept that the town can add and lose individuals, viewpoints, talents and of course problems!

I also appreciate how many of the people really enjoy the cold and isolation, which appeals to me, here in Maine.
    thanks and keep them coming!

  18. Debra S Schwartz says:

I would love a novella from Eric’s perspective, this change is going to affect him the most since all he’s ever known was Rockton.

  19. I am so glad there will be another series!! I loved Rockton and I can’t wait to read all about Haven’s Rock. As I have listened to the whole series on audiobook, I hope Therese Plummer will be narrating the new series.
I would love a novella from April’s perspective. Eric’s perspective would be awesome of course. But I love April and I really want to see a relationship between April and Kenny!

  20. Loved the Rockton series and I am so happy that we will get more of Casey and Eric! Can’t wait for the new series to start. Thanks for such good stories!
